CoD World at War(PS3)

Thu Feb 5, 2009, 5:21 PM
Took 5 stores to find a copy of it for the ps3, and after playing it all I can say is that CoD4 was better.

Graphics wise it beats out what I was able to see on my computer from its predecessor. The flame thrower is a sight to behold, the jungles are vibrant and the destroyed cities are convincing. I really enjoyed the beginning of the Russian section when your fleeing from a burning building as it falls down around you.

Controls are really tight for a console shooter with the exception of one section. Now first I gotta ask, "Why do they need to stick one vehicle section into these games?" And to make it worst the vehicle controls are unintuitive. Up on the left stick doesn't mean forward you see, It means move to wards the top of the screen. You want to move across the screen shooting broadside at the target? nope? One your tank turns just enough forward becomes the other direction. The result is you stop moving for a sec and get pummeled by the enemies.

AI isn't really there as they system is the standard spawn baddies in front of you until you push into the next section crap or you've been alive long enough to trigger the next event. There were only a few sections that you could kill everyone without them spawning repeatably. You allies still havent learned to push forward on there own and the enemies still pick you over anyone else available making it so you gotta work out this one method to push to the next area or you will die, a lot.

Audio seems to have been designed for use on only a 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound system, either that or they fail in the idea of letting you hear your surroundings. This is more noticeable in multiplayer where you can have a group of enemies run right in front of you and you might, might, hear one footstep. Running barking dogs as well will run right up behind you and tear you a new one without a skitter or a growl as a warning. Zombies will shuffle behind you with not a single moan or grunt, actually I think they only made sound when pounding on the barriers to get in.

Multiplayer has proving enjoyable so far other than the sound issues. The perk system has been copied right across from CoD4 which helps to extend its lifespan and the zombie mode is enjoyable enough by itself that i cant wait to try it with other actual players.

Id say no replayability for this game, Its short and has enough frustrating bits that you feel no desire to play through again on another difficulty. All the levels are unlocked after the first play through so you replay your favourite sections anyways.

Overall a short game, I beat it in an evening and thats including repeating some particularly irritating sections. Not a very good sequel it didn't improve on anything other that graphics and to be honest woulda been better as an expansion pack than a stand alone package. I still cant figure out why it was sold out everywhere. I'll prolly end up back to playing Battlefield: Bad Company(Best) and Metal Gear Online(Ok) anyways. prolly a rental unless the multiplayer appeals to you and you don't already have CoD 4. This game will be getting traded into Futureshop later to help pay for something else.
